Conversion rate optimization has a reputation for being either overly technical or vague marketing advice. In practice, it's a fairly simple discipline: find the step where people are dropping off, form a specific hypothesis about why, and test a change against that hypothesis.
Step 1 — Map the actual funnel
Before optimizing anything, you need visibility into where visitors go: landing page → product page → cart → checkout → confirmation. Analytics tools will show you the drop-off percentage at each stage. This is where the real priorities live — not in opinions about what "looks better."
Step 2 — Focus on the biggest leak first
It's tempting to redesign the homepage because it's the most visible page. But if 70% of your losses happen at checkout, that's where effort belongs. Chase the largest number, not the most visible page.
Step 3 — Form a specific hypothesis
"Improve the product page" isn't a hypothesis — it's a wish. A useful hypothesis is specific and testable:
- "Adding size guidance near the Add to Cart button will reduce cart abandonment from sizing uncertainty"
- "Showing delivery date estimates on the product page will increase add-to-cart rate"
- "Reducing checkout to a single page will reduce mobile drop-off"
Step 4 — Change one variable at a time
Redesigning five things at once might improve conversion, but you'll have no idea which change mattered — which means you can't repeat the win elsewhere. Isolate variables wherever your traffic volume allows for it.
Step 5 — Use social proof deliberately
Reviews, ratings, and trust badges work because they reduce perceived risk at the exact moment someone is deciding whether to buy. Placement matters as much as presence — put proof near the decision point, not buried in a separate tab.
CRO isn't about making a site prettier. It's about removing the specific friction that's stopping a specific customer from buying.
Done consistently, this process compounds — small, evidence-based improvements stacked over months tend to outperform one large redesign, and cost far less to get there.
